Just out of interest, is anyone playing this game? I love it - so different from other MMORPGs....it's like a MMO freelancer.

Sounds really great game form what I've heard, I just don't have the time (or money) to play. _________________ New ST site :: New ST Forums

Had a look at the site and downloaded the game this evening... Not sure if or when I will try it but Freelancer was the first online game I ever played and I loved it..
This looks like what Freelancer COULD have been if it were a little more dynamic.
Not sure but I think I saw on the site that you get a free month if you setup with a credit card. _________________

I've read about it. Sounds really great, but I've heard that the time investment is a killer.
Given my limited time, I usually just play MxO (with a bit of SWG thrown in).
Any thoughts? |

well re time, one of the best things about eve is that you train offline and online - you character learns your next skilll whether you're playing or not. But it definitely goes slow to start with... |

Well I have been checking out the website for it and it does look pretty good. Kind of a cross between Freelancer and X2, I downloaded some of the movie files too.
Have to admit it looks pretty cool. I have downloaded and installed it. Haven't created an account yet though.
Any tips for a new player bodeca?
I think I may have to create an account and get in game for a proper look soon. _________________

You're right, good guess - it's much more X2 than FL, though it's significantly bigger than X2 in size (which was already huge compared to FL) 6000 systems currently and counting.

Now, erm given I have 19 days logged, I'm not really one to ask...hmm, this is what i've learned so far.
1. Don't worry about which race you choose, they're much of a muchness...with the following exceptions - Minmatar and Caldari tend to lend themselves slightly more to combat, Gallenti and Amarr to trading and mining - however all routes are important for money making and no race is so bad at anything that you can't do it...much more important is attributes so...
2. Do worry how you set up your skills attributes in your starting character. More memory (+2 points above everything else), slightly more intelligence (+1 points), equal willpower and perception and slightly lower charisma (-1 points) will set you up well. I overdid intelligence on my first build.
3. Train skills offline and online - train the skills that take 6+ hours (or days) overnight, and the little quick ones (1 hour or so) while you play
4. Learn learn and learn - there's a whole tree devoted to learning skills, it gives you nothing but attribute point improvement, but specialising it will rapidly increase how fast you train other skills and works out much better over the long term.
5. Go armour tanking even in your early frigates - it feels more risky than shield tanking (since most shielders use their armour as last resort) but it makes you much harder to kill.
6. If you play Minmater, go for speed training (afterburners, microwarpdrives etc.), your ships are the fastest of all the races and eventually you'll be the only race to be able to outrun missiles. It feels safter to try to rely on tanking solely (the other races HAVE to do this only, you can do this AND speed) but you're really designed to be quick and deadly and you'll be suprised how useful this is when you specialise here. Can't tip on the other races coz I don't know them yet.
7. Max out in mining skills when you choose your starter character options, but try to avoid industry (you won't need it yet). Let combat take a bit of a back seat because you'll force yourself to train this, while you'll probably let mining take a back seat - mining is by far the quickest way to earn cash to start with and it's good to have those skills preloaded.
8. Don't don't don't don't don't go into systems less than 0.5 security (0.4 and below), even when you think you know the game a bit and even when you think you'll survive and even when you've plucked up courage and tried them out a bit and even when you think you can warp to saftey and even when someone else says you'll be ok...actually especially if someone else says you'll be ok. You'll die...you'll die and you'll die but mostly you'll die. You'll particularly die when you meet a player controlled choke point and you won't learn where they are or how to avoid them for at least 6 months. Especially don't pack all your best stuff into a fast frigate and make a run for the appealing agent SOE homeworld in 0.0 space - you'll lose all your nice stuff and join me and countless other arrogant noobs in lamenting the fact that no-one hears you scream in space.
