I don't know if anyone here is a technical guru, but here goes:

My computer has recently gone on strike (hence posting from office computer).

When I boot up, I get the normal start up stuff, go to the windows loading screen and then my background appears and... nothing. It just stops.

I don't get my firewall popup, I don't get the taskbar, my desktop icons don't appear etc.

It seems to be frozen, because nothing happens and whenever I press a key I get that annoying Windows "ding" of an invalid key press.

However, two things are wierd:
1. If I press the power button again, the machine shuts down normally.
2. I can boot in safe mode and everything appears OK (although I've been too scared to actually fiddle in case I break something permanently).

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

I'd also advise you to pop into safe mode and back up everything you want to keep (assuming they're virus-free). Then if you can't fix it yourself, a full format won't set you back days.

If you're on Windows 2000 or XP, just reinstall Windows over your current installation. It works and saves you from ugly formatting (not that this is less ugly, but still).

Well. After:

Reinstalling my graphics card drivers...
Reinstalling Windows...
Reinstalling HD drivers...
Reinstalling MB drivers...
Losing my mind...
Hating Microsoft some more...
Giving serious thought to assassinating Bloody Bill...

My computer is now working again. Except my connection is really slow <sobs>.

Oh well... more experimentation is required, I suppose...
